Youth Sports Programs

The Youth Sports program is open to each of the eight targeted developments:

This program is based upon a seven component structure, six of which are held only in the Summer months of June to August. The Saturday Sports Instruction Program is operated on the school year calendar.

A lunch is provided each day. Penn State will be hosting at least three of five scheduled camps at the Penn State Fayette Campus. A business camp, Targeted to 13 - 16 year olds is being scheduled at the Uniontown Mall, to provide interaction with the Mall merchants in a hands on environment. A second session, Art Camp, targeting 8 - 12 years old, may be held at a local area art studio.

Here is a brief description of each component:

Recreational Swim The popular Saturday swim sessions will be offered again at the YMCA every Saturday from 12 - 2. The sessions are open to all participating sites for youths ages 8 to 16. Transportation is provided by Goodwill Industries.

Summer Sports Ages 8-16 A weeklong sports program designed to teach and develop skills for the athletic activity selected by the participants at each location. This program will be held at each participating development.

Summer Sports Ages 4-7 This is a similar program to the one developed for the older participants, but focuses on fundamentals and is tailored for the shorter attention spans. Since 50% of the children in FCHA developments are under the ages of 8, this program addresses a previously untapped segment of the population. This program will also be held on location.

Summer Playground program This activity will be open to youth ages 4 - 16. The playground sessions will be held Monday thru Friday from 10a.m. to 2 p.m. A lunch will be provided for the sites that do not have a lunch program. A variety of activities will be held, including sports, games, crafts, and guest speakers. Each of the activities will be age segregated into groups of 4-7, 8-12, and 13 & up. These activities will be held on site.

Sports Skills Contest Three separate sport contests will be held throughout the summer to give participants the opportunity to test their skills against others in their own age group. All contests will be held at the YMCA and are open to 8-16 year olds.

Summer Expedition program A series of three merit based field trips have been planned throughout the summer. Proposed trips include a Pirate baseball game, the Rope and Obstacle Course at Presley Ridge and Swing and Hit complex in Mt. Pleasant. A maximum of forty participants per trip will be allowed. To participate the children are required to write an essay and compete with others in their age group for the best essay. Topics will include their "heroes" and why that person is a "hero".

Saturday Sports Instruction program This popular program was offered on an experimental basis in the fall to participating residents 8 to 18. Swim lessons, Karate, and Gymnastics are included in this program. These sessions are held at the YMCA during the school year. Transportation is provided by Goodwill Industries.
